Roger Braley

Compilers Preface
It is with the hope that the Braley Genealogy may prove to be as free from errors as similar books. It would be beyond my fondest dream to expect it to be entirely free from errors. I have attempted to collect every family record, and to verify those collected. But often town vital records, tombstones, and family Bibles disagree. Also, I have received data from multiple sources in the same family, which did not agree in everything, so there are ways for errors to creep in.
It is with disappointment on my part, that family records are not as complete as I would like them to be. However, in most cases errors are the result of not replying to my request for information. There are a few incomplete records as I have been unable to locate parties to request information.
No expense or care is withheld in the compilation of the book, and I hope it will prove satisfactory to its readers.

Introduction As written by Abner L. Braley c.1900 and Ellison L. Braley c.1907
Compiled, updated and edited by Robert M. Braley Jr. in 2021
In common with some other American families the Braley’s are forced to rely on tradition to account for the presence of their progenitors in this country.
The familiar is that three Welshmen who were brothers Were “pressed” on a British vessel. Being of the Quaker faith, there tenets forbade participation in war, and accordingly, they availed themselves of the first opportunity to escape.
The legend runs that because of destitution they ate the soles of their shoes for food, and to conceal their identity, changed their name to Braley.
Of the three brothers two disappeared, the hazy tradition alone remaining that one of them returned to Wales.
One of the brothers married a widow Russell, and at least the name “Russell” has persisted in the family even to the present day. All branches of the family accept the tradition related above.
One branch alone, claims that the Braleys are of French Huguenot extraction, that the name was originally “Brales,” and pronounced in French as if “es” were “ez”. The Genealogy of the Braley Family written by Ellison L. Braley, published in 1907 follows this tradition.
A very full and careful investigation of all available sources of information has failed to disclose anything more complete or authentic than the fragmentary results which follow.
In 1643, a list of men capable of bearing arms at Marshfield gives the name of Robert Brelles, allowing a slight supposition to arise that Robert might be the ancestor of the family.
The records further state that on August 24, 1676, James Brayley served in Major Savage’s Company; that on February 29, 1675, James Brierly is in Colonel Joseph Gardner’s Company; that on December 10, 1675, Corporal James Brarley is in Major Appleton’s Company with both latter commanders being then engaged in the Narragannsett war.
As to the different spelling of the names, we can only note, the usual tendency of the 17th century to guess at a man’s name when writing it. The use of sealings and marks had not yet wholly vanished.
On the Portsmouth, RI records, Roger Braley, whom tradition calls the progenitor of the American family has his named spelled “Brailey”.
On the records of Rochester, Massachusetts, the later Roger is called “Bralee”, and he certainly signed deeds as “Brailey,” as well as “Braley.”
The second Roger formerly lived in Middleborn, and while removed from that place to Rochester, it is said that he picked up a white stone which caught his fancy and brought it with him. The story goes on to say that this stone is at his grave in the family cemetery in North Rochester. In that cemetery there is such a stone at his grave.
The tendency of the Braleys to embrace the beliefs of the Society of Friends, did not prevent many of them from serving in the Revolutionary War.
Gideon Braley enlisted at Adams, Mass and served 96 days. He was at the taking of Ticonderoga.
John Braley of Freetown is reported as dead August 1, 1778, was in the march of Captain Rounneeville from Freetown April 19, 1775.
Nathaniel Braley was First Lieutenant of the Brigantine “Reprisal”.
This Nathaniel was born in Rehoboth, Mass., May 5, 1775. At the age of eleven he went as cabin boy and followed the sea until he was thirty-three years of age. For many years he commanded a vessel running to the East Indies and China. In the Revolutionary War, he was captured and kept on one of the terrible hulks in the harbor of New York, where he suffered the usual hardships of those places. Escaping, he was sent to England, perhaps to Dartmoor, whence he escaped, and by the aid of friends reached France. Returning to Rehoboth, he removed to Savoy, Mass., with his wife, the daughter of Elisha Carpenter, who owned land in Savoy on which the couple settled.
In 1801, they removed to Palmyra, New York.
On June 25, 1802, Nathaniel died. His widow Cynthia made her home with her daughters till 1813. In 1819 they moved to Gaines, Orleans Co., where the widow lived until her death on March 18, 1841.
Nathaniel’s wallet which he carried with him through the war is now in the possession of his descendants at Albion, New York.
William Braley, age eighteen, enlisted in Bristol County (from Rehoboth) in 1779.
Wingate Braley of Haverhill also served.
The race, although hardy and prolife in the early days, consisted principally of yeomen and sailors. None of them have achieved great distinction in military or civil life, yet they have always been a law-abiding, God-fearing people, active and efficient members of the community in which their lives have been spent.
